Have a wonderful Shabbos! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dvar Torah
In the beginning of this week’s Parsha, we find Avraham Avinu sitting outside in the unnatural heat, desperate for guests. As Rashi expounds, Hashem sees Avraham’s pain due to lack of guests and subsequently sends three Malachim his way. Reb Moshe Feinstein points out that Avraham’s tza'ar in this situation seems strange. After all, it’s not as though he had guests in front of him but was unable to serve them due to his physical state (i.e. an אונס). There were no guests, so he wasn’t even “in the parsha”! It’s seemingly comparable to a person bemoaning the fact that he is not able to keep Shabbos during the week. Reb Moshe explains this as follows; the pain felt by Avraham at this moment stemmed from a visceral desire to just do the mitzvah of hachnasas orchim . He had a תאוה to do hachnasas orchim in the same way that we have a תאוה for food or other physical pleasures. Even if those pleasures may be unattainable for us in the moment, we still desire them because we know how good they are. That is why Avraham was still distressed, despite the fact that there were no guests who needed his chesed at the moment. He simply had a תאוה for chesed that needed to be fulfilled. Hashem should help us to direct out desires towards doing mitzvos. Good Shabbos, Yitzy Labowitz
