The Future Smells Bright!

The Torah describes that Korbonos have a רֵיחַ־נִיחוֹחַ, pleasing smell, to Hashem. It’s safe to assume that it’s not referring to the delicious smell of the BBQ coming off the mizbeach. So what is the pleasing smell referring to?

Ksav V’kalaba explains that the רֵיחַ־נִיחוֹחַ is actually coming from the person, not the Korbon. The sense of smell informs one of what lies ahead. For example, when someone comes home to fresh challah baking in the oven, he can smell it well before entering the house. The aroma is the indicator for the challah that lay ahead. When someone brings a Korbon for an aveira and he is looking to mend his ways, Hashem smells the sincerity of the person and his hope to be better in the future. The רֵיחַ־נִיחוֹחַ is the indication of the person mending his ways and taking a sincere step in the right direction henceforth.

Have a good Shabbos and freilichen Purim!
