Dvar Torah
We have heard since we were young about Yaakov’s dream. We know that the malachim went up and down the ladder, while Hashem spoke to Yaakov and told him about how great Klal Yisrael were going to be in the future. What was the point of the ladder? The Malachim could have gone up and down without a ladder?
One of my Rebbeim in Yeshivas Toras Simcha in Eretz Yisrael, Rabbi Yonason Friedlander, asked this question. I remember hearing it from him and being taken by the simplicity of this obvious, but glaring, question.
Rabbi Friedlander’s answer was simple as well, but can take a lifetime to internalize. In order to ‘go up the ladder’, meaning in order to grow as a yid, one needs to go up step by step, in a systematic fashion. Just like when climbing a ladder we need to go up rung by rung, it is the same thing when growing in Avodas Hashem. We all want to grow, we all have aspirations. In order to fulfill our goals of growth, we need to have a plan that is steady, that has us making strides in a way that will have keyum. It is not that we all of a sudden make large changes, but rather making incremental changes slowly and sensibly. I think we all know this, but the chiddush to me here is that the Torah is telling us this lesson straight out. The Torah is outlining the key to growth for us. We should have a goal in mind and recognize the action steps it will take to get there and take one step at a time towards reaching that goal. That is the true key to success, working methodically, rung by rung. We should all be zoche to ‘go up the ladder’ and grow leaps and bounds, one step at a time!
Good Shabbos!
