Dvar Torah
In this week’s parsha, we learn about the incredible נסים Hashem performed by קריעת ים סוף - in addition to the wonders He performed in the land of Mitzrayim. The question that must be dealt with is why a second round of נסים was needed at all. Why wasn’t the mission already accomplished? Hashem had already showed His hashgacha over the Jewish People and His desire to take them as a nation by way of יציאת מצרים itself!
There are several approaches offered by the mefarshim to answer this question. Some say that the מכות in Mitzrayim only represented punishment for the מצריים, and קריעת ים סוף was necessary to represent the saving of the Jewish People. Others maintain that the מכות, while awesome and miraculous, were not enough to frighten the גויים living in ארץ ישראל and surrounding lands, and to give בני ישראל the confidence to defeat those strong nations; only something with the magnitude of קריעת ים סוף was able to do so.
Perhaps we can propose another answer:
Throughout their sojourn in the desert, the Jewish People were frequently complaining about their situation and comparing it with their experience in Mitzrayim. Interestingly, it was immediately before קריעת ים סוף and shortly after קריעת י"ס, that בנ"י complained and said they would rather be back in Mitzrayim!
The reason they complained so much is because, as we know, aside from being slaves physically to Mitzrayim, בנ"י were also enslaved to Egyptian culture and to their deities. So much so, that 80% of the Jewish People did not merit to leave. Even those who remained still identified very much as Egyptians. They therefore constantly complained they wanted to go back, because מצרים was the land they felt so comfortable in.
We understand then that בני ישראל had to experience a יציאהfrom מצרים both physically and spiritually. To have a physical יציאת מצרים, the Jewish people needed to be able to leave Egypt even while the Egyptians retained a stronghold on their land; if the Egyptians would have died before the Jews left, no physical יציאת מצרים would have occurred. However, since the Egyptians were still alive, a spiritual יציאה had never fully transpired, because the Jewish People still felt connected to the nation of מצרים. To completely nullify this connection, קריעת ים סוף had to ensue, to totally undo the spiritual bondage of בני ישראל to מצרים. [Perhaps it is for this reason, that the מלאכים only protested 'הללו עובדי ע"ז והללו עובדי ע"ז' now and did not do so back in Egypt when בנ"י left.]
Good Shabbos!
